What Is Duochrome Eyeshadow?
Duochrome eyeshadow is a color-shifting eye product that shows two principal color impressions as the lighting, viewing angle or application base changes.
A specialty optical-effect material produces the dual reflection, while the eyeshadow base formula supports texture, pickup, adhesion and the required pressed or loose format. The finished appearance is defined by the relationship between the visible foundation color and the secondary reflected color.
Base Color
The base color is the shade most visible from the front or under ordinary light. It may be transparent, pale, neutral or distinctly colored, depending on the selected effect material and formula.
Shift Color
The shift color becomes more visible when the light source or viewing angle changes. Its strength depends on the effect material, concentration, base color and application surface.
For a longer consumer-level explanation, read what duochrome eyeshadow is and how the effect works.

How a Duochrome Shade Is Evaluated
A useful two-color effect must balance visual movement with texture, product stability and real application.
Base-to-Shift Contrast
The laboratory checks whether both colors remain distinguishable without allowing the base pigments to hide the reflected shade.
Surface and Layering
Bare skin, primer and a dark base can change the apparent intensity, transparency and contrast of the dual-reflection effect.
Pressed or Loose Performance
Pressing pressure, binder balance and loose-powder flow may change pickup and the visibility of the color shift.
Duochrome vs Metallic, Multichrome and Holographic
These finishes can be used in one collection, but each is defined by a different reflective priority.
| Effect | Primary Appearance | Development Focus | Relevant Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Duochrome | Two principal color impressions across angle or light | Base color, shift color and their visual balance | This page |
| Shimmer | Softer or dispersed pearlescent brightness | Pearl size, shine, base color and smoothness | Product-specific shimmer content |
| Sparkle Metallic | Dense silver-reflective shine with visible pearl sparkle | Silver-effect and pearlescent material blend | Metallic Eyeshadow |
| Multichrome | Several visible colors moving through a wider shift path | Number of shifts, color path and viewing-angle performance | Multichrome Manufacturing |
| Holographic | Rainbow, prism-like or laser-style reflection | Prismatic reflection, base transparency and particle effect | Holographic Eyeshadow |

How to Approve a Duochrome Eyeshadow Sample

Photos and videos are useful for communication, but the camera, screen, background and lighting can alter the apparent colors. Final approval should use the physical sample.
- Base color from a normal front view
- Secondary reflection from side angles
- Shift strength under direct light
- Appearance under softer indoor light
- Result on bare skin, primer and a dark base where relevant
- Finger and brush pickup
- Adhesion, smoothness and visible fallout
- Pressed surface stability or loose-powder flow
